Gifts for Caregivers: Not just for the Holidays!

With the holidays quickly approaching, i have been asked by clients and family members alike what the best gifts for caregivers are this season.

nurse

After some reflection about all the things caregivers do for the people they are taking care of, i made a few adjustments to my answer. There is no amount of money that will ever fully recognize the amount of stress, love, and care that any family or professional caregiver goes through each and every day. However, here are a few ideas that may help the caregivers in your life feel recognized, appreciated and pampered.

The people that help take care of you day in and day out work very hard to keep you comfortable and often get paid little for what they do. All the caregivers and other employees at your assisted living or retirement home deserve some appreciation. The holidays are as good a time as any to give it to them. Obviously, gifts aren’t one-size-fits-all. Do your best to listen to the caregivers working with you every day and see if they mention anything that could make finding a good, relevant gift for them easier. If nothing seems to come up though, maybe some of these gift ideas for caregivers can help you out.

Thoughtful Gifts For The Caregiver

Sometimes words aren’t enough.

gift

Question: Nursing Home Gift Ideas

Question:

what kind of gift can i get for an 80-year-old woman who thinks she's going into a home for a couple of weeks, but in reality, she's going there to live?

answer:

the gift is not the issue; rather, the issue is whether you plan on telling her the truth or not. In some cases, with dementia patients, residents may hold onto certain ideas and not comprehend the complexity of their situation. My mother, for example, after being in a nursing home for nearly three years, told me that when and if her older sister, who shared a room with her, passed away, she would be ready to come home. At that point, mom was completely dependent on caregivers for daily needs: medication; meal preparation; showering and more.

Question: what are good holiday gift ideas for residents in nursing homes?

answer: it doesn’t matter where you live or how old you are-there’s nothing like a cheerfully wrapped present to brighten your spirits. Residents in nursing homes present some unique challenges in gift-giving, so i’ve created a list that’s received the “seal of approval” from those who work in nursing homes. And my guess is they would make any resident feel special during the season. As you go through this list, consider what it would be like if you and everyone who reads this decided to go out and buy just one extra gift and drop it off (or mail it) to their nearest nursing home to be given to a resident without family or friends.

Brief History of National Nurses Week

Walking down the memory lane and casting light upon the history of the happy nurses' week, it would be interesting to note that back in 1971, the day of may 12th, was designated by the international council of nurses (icn) as the international nurses day. This is the same day when florence nightingale's birthday is also celebrated. Following this, in 1985, canadian ministry of health also dedicated the second week of may as nurses week in the country in recognition of the achievements of the nursing profession.

Get your whole town involved to recognize the importance of nursing in your community. Form a partnership with other local healthcare clinics and hospitals to make a group announcement regarding national nurses week. Work with your local library to create a display highlighting books about nursing and the history of healthcare. Send your most charismatic nurse to schools — elementary through high school — to talk about the nursing profession.
